Below-Normal Lung Function Predicts Development Of COPD

Video - View Dr. Benzinger's video.

Dutch researchers report that patients with below-normal lung function and early, persistent respiratory symptoms have a high risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) within 5 years. They found that lung function below the normal range and mucus hypersecretion at baseline appeared to be predictive of the development of moderate COPD.

While Dr. Albers states that there is no pharmacotherapeutic intervention that reduces COPD progression, early detection provides some relief. In addition, bronchodilator and anti-inflammatory medication may reduce symptoms, improve quality of life and/or reduce the exacerbation frequency.
The focus should be on prevention - on the major cause of the disease which is cigarette smoking.

Listen to my interview with Dr. Liebermann on her new book Body Signs. Often early detection of potential life threatening disease can be accomplished by you, at home. This is great information for a society that must learn to be more in tune with preventing disease before it forms.
